North Cook Responds to DeWitt’s 12 Critical Issues Facing Education in 2020
Peter DeWitt’s article 12 Critical Issues Facing Education in 2020 in the December 15, 2019 Education Week provides much food for thought. In the article, DeWitt says it seems that education continues to take a back seat to political events. He highlights what he thinks are important issues that need to be tackled in order to make meaningful changes in education in the U.S.
Let’s take a moment to talk about a few of these issues and how North Cook ISC, your Regional Office of Education, not only agrees with DeWitt, but is also taking action to address them!
School Leadership (including Department Chairs, PLC & Grade Level Leaders, and being prepared for the position) - Join us for the Educator Workshop “So You Want to Be a Department Chair” on February 28th...perfect for current or aspiring Department Chairs. In addition, we presented AA 3649 “Educators as Servant Leaders: Helping Others Succeed” in November. We offer many Administrator Academies and Educator Workshops on the topic of leadership because we, too, believe that good leaders have a huge impact on effective teachers and successful students. It’s why we offer an annual Superintendents’ Book Club when we address a current topic/book in a conversation-safe environment among North Cook district leaders.
Cultures of Equity - Equity is the latest buzzword in education and a State mandate, as it should be, to ensure ALL students enjoy the same opportunity to achieve in our schools. Did you know North Cook ISC is offering an Educator Workshop “Equity in the Classroom” on February 7th? This fits right in with DeWitt’s thinking. Read more about it and register now.
District Office/Building-Level Relationships - We couldn’t agree more that this connection is vital to improvement. Adaptive Leadership for School Administrators: Dealing With Change (AA 1825) is scheduled at North Cook ISC for April 2, 2020. Learn more here. To build capacity and relationships, North Cook ISC also offers the following free networking series for our educational leaders: Curriculum & Instruction, Student Services, Instructional Technology Coaches, and Technology Directors.
Health & Wellness (specifically mindfulness) - North Cook ISC offered an Educator Workshop “Mindfulness Practices for the Classroom” in October 2019; unfortunately, it was cancelled due to low enrollment. If you, like DeWitt, have been witness to increased student stress and anxiety, let us know if you would be available to attend the “Mindfulness Practices” workshop and we will consider rescheduling it.
Don’t forget, in addition to Administrator Academies and Educator Workshops offered on site at our new location in Des Plaines, North Cook ISC can also provide Administrator Academies and other customized Professional Development onsite in your district.
Contact our office at (847) 824-8300 or look through our website for information on any of these opportunities or to let us know how we can help you with any of these or other critical issues that you face.
We’re here to support you!
