Mentoring the Mentors: The “What, When and How” of Mentoring (ISBE #1378)

As we experience more stringent preparation and certification requirements for educators, along with higher stakes evaluation systems, it’s essential that there is an attendant strengthening of support systems. Principals of all experience levels and in all settings are cordially invited and encouraged to join in this day of building a deeper understanding of the steps, strategies, and scheduling of a successful mentoring program for teachers and/or new principals. The course will provide an in-depth review of the skills and dispositions required for a successful mentoring relationship along with the specifics such as an introductory letter, sample sessions, list of documents that will be helpful in the mentoring relationship.

Program:		Specific outcomes for this day’s course include the following: 1. Participants will understand the complexity of the mentor/teacher or mentor/principal relationship and will be able to identify specific strategies that promote a successful mentoring relationship. 2. Participants will understand a step-by-step process for beginning a mentoring relationship and how to implement specific strategies and scheduling for staff development. 3. Participants will understand the difference between the mentoring and evaluator roles performed by the principal as evidenced in decision-making and ongoing interactions.
