Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most ( ISBE # 1160)

When a conversation is difficult, there is a reason. This course will help school leaders in analyzing the issues of conflict and consternation that so often lurk beneath the surface of difficult conversations. Using the fresh ideas and new knowledge gained in this Academy, combined with effective communication strategies, participants will be better equipped to move their organizations forward.

Program:Participants will receive a copy of the book Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most by Stone, Patton and Heen. Using her skill as a presenter and her experience addressing conflictual issues in a variety of educational settings, Dr. Habschmidt will lead a highly interactive and productive day for participants. Specific subtopics that will be addressed include identifying the underlying problem and becoming a learner in addressing the problem. Conversations typed as the “What Happened,’’ “Feelings,’’ and the “Identity” conversations will be explored, and participants will learn to transform these and create the “learning” conversation.
